Gokyo Lakes Trek

4th & 5th lakes
The Gokyo Lakes area at the head of Dudh Koshi
valley is no less spectacular for many of those
who have been to both Kalapattar reckon that the
one from Gokyo offers the better views. This
high trek goes through the Sherpa land ascending
the stunning Gokyo valley to the glacial lakes
under the great peaks of Cho-Oyu – the fourth
highest peak in the world. The highlight of the
trek is ascent of 5340m Gokyo RI, from where we
gain panoramic views of Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse,
and Makalu, Cho-Oyu, Gyanchungkang and great
Ngozumpa glacier. Above all the sunsets are
unforgettable from here.
We have designed a sensible acclimatization
program, which is essential if heading to Gokyo
valley – the helicopter rescue pilots call it
‘death valley’ because many people go up very
fast, partly because walking days are short,
tempting trekkers to go past their
acclimatization. The program also engage a hike
to the fifth lakes for a view that is more
extensive than from Gokyo RI and Kalapattar` |

Loben Expeditions trips are designed for
flexible, energetic people who like to be active
and have a spirit of adventure and a positive
attitude. We rate this trip as a “moderate to
challenge.” You should have some experience with
sound physical condition. Most days are spent at
altitudes above 3500 m (the highest elevation on
trek is the hike to the Kalapattar at 5340 m),
and our hikes will be between five and six hours
each day, broken up by a nice rest and a hot
lunch.
Porters or pack animals carry most of the gear
and camp supplies, leaving you free to hike with
only a light day pack. Even so, trekking at high
altitudes is strenuous. Exercise at high
altitude compounds the physiologic stress. In
addition, high altitude may create discomfort
and symptoms of illness that you do not
experience while exercising at lower elevations,
such as shortness of breath, restlessness or
sleeplessness at night, and headaches. You need
to be in excellent health and top physical
condition to enjoy such an experience, with
adequate cardiovascular endurance, muscular
strength, and excellent balance. No technical
climbing or other special abilities are
required. |
